SSO Fumigates Nearly 100 Cemeteries for Day of the Dead to Prevent Dengue
Servicios de Salud de Oaxaca fumigated cemeteries in the state capital and neighboring municipalities, and gave talks on removing weeds and discarded containers that serve as breeding sites for the mosquito that transmits dengue, Zika and chikungunya.
Ahead of the Day of the Dead celebration, Servicios de Salud de Oaxaca (SSO) carried out thermal fogging in nearly 100 cemeteries in the state capital and neighboring municipalities to prevent the spread of the mosquito that transmits dengue, Zika and chikungunya. Beforehand, crews also removed discarded containers and cleaned cemeteries in coordination with municipal authorities.
Staff from the Vectors program worked mainly in Oaxaca de Juárez, Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Santa María Atzompa and Santa Lucía del Camino, as well as along the route toward the Valle de Etla, the Heroica Ciudad de Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, Santa María El Tule, the Heroica Ciudad de Ejutla de Crespo and Ocotlán de Morelos, among others.
The agency gave talks to those responsible for graves on removing weeds and containers such as candle holders and flower vases, which act as reservoirs for Aedes aegypti. People were encouraged to follow the "wash, cover, flip and discard" strategy, use damp sand in vases instead of water, wear long sleeves and pants, and apply repellent when visiting cemeteries.
